One of my favorite graphic organizers is an I-Chart. Over the years, I worked very hard with co-teachers and fellow English teachers to find and tweak a go-to graphic organizer that kids liked and found useful: the I-Chart is the result of lots of professional development and classroom experience. This graphic organizer is useful for both single paragraph and multi-paragraph essays, and students may add as many details and support to the middle as necessary to truly get their point across to readers. We named it the I-chart simply because it seemed to help kids remember the shape and structure of it.
Overall, prewriting graphic organizers are the perfect tool for students as their first step in the writing process, and the perfect formative assessment tool for teachers. You know your students better than anyone. So, adapt and modify these prewriting graphic organizers to fit your classroom needs, just as you would with any other instructional tools.
